Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ High School

Too Good for Drugs & Violence High School is a comprehensive prevention education program for High School students. Designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to remain safe and drug free, this program combines the core concepts of Too Good for Violence™ K–8 and Too Good for Drugs™ K–8 in an innovative approach that allows students and schools to meet both prevention and academic needs. The Too Good for Drugs & Violence™ High School program incorporates three core components: Core Curriculum for 9th or 10th grade students; Infusion Lessons for 11th or 12th grade students and Staff Development for educators.

 

Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ High School Core Curriculum Revised Edition

Too Good for Drugs and Violence High School Core Curriculum is designed for the 9th and tenth grade student.

New for 2008 the Too Good for Drugs & Violence™ High School Core Curriculum has been revised with a new 10 Lesson delivery model. Capturing the the same core research based concepts and easy to teach lesson plan design of the 14 Lesson Edition and condensed to a 10 Lesson model, the Revised Edition allows you more flexibility in implementing this effective prevention program .

The Revised Edition introduces a stronger emphasis on the effects of Under Age Drinking in addition to the following key prevention concepts:

  • Promotes bonding.
  • Develops positive life skills.
  • Establishes positive, violence- and drug-free norms.

Normative education is an important element of the program. Normative education addresses the influence of passive social pressure and social modeling; it corrects common misperceptions among teens about the prevalence and acceptability of drug use and focuses on establishing a positive climate free of drugs and violence.

Core Curriculum Lessons

  1. My Own Journey - Introduces the importance of goal setting and how underage drinking can interfere with reaching one's goals.
  2. You've Been Played: A Look at Underage Drinking - Focuses on helping students identify media manipulation and recognize how these attitudes affect their decisions regarding underage drinking.
  3. It's All Up to You - Students apply a decision making model to important decisions many high school students face.
  4. Getting What You Want - Teaches students the complexity of listening and understanding. It also gives students the opportunity to see the importance of verbal and nonverbal communication.
  5. The Conflict Escalator - Focuses on identifying and recognizing the characteristics of a conflict and the skills needed to de-escalate a conflict before it becomes violent.
  6. Breaking Down Walls - Stresses the importance of developing a healthy sense of self and appreciating individual differences and how these factors can be helpful when dealing with prejudice and discrimination.
  7. Relationships 101 - Identifies the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships and the effects drug use can have on relationships.
  8. Up In Smoke - Focuses on misconceptions about tobacco and marijuana.
  9. The Reality of Drugs - Teaches students about the symptoms and the dangers of abusing prescription medication, cough and cold medications, ecstasy, cocaine and methamphetamine.
  10. Your Journey to a Safe and Drug-Free Life - Teaches stages of addiction teenagers and possible sources of help. This lesson also serves as a review of lessons 1-9.

Too Good for Drugs & Violence™ High School Revised completes a consistent, comprehensive K–12 prevention plan- For complete, comprehensive drug and violence prevention programming, use Too Good for Drugs K-8 and Too Good for Violence K-8 for students in grades K-8 students and Too Good for Drugs & Violence™ High School for students in grades 9-12.

 

Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ Infusion Lessons
The Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ High School Infusion Lessons take the prevention message to eleventh and twelfth grade students. These lessons are designed to be taught in English, Social Studies, and Science/Health subject classes to incorporate and reinforce the prevention skills taught in the Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ High School core curriculum in the ninth and tenth grades. The Infusion Lessons reinforce personal and interpersonal skills and social skills as well as promote strong resistance skills.

Each infusion lesson lists prevention objectives and objectives based on national standards.

Too Good for Drugs and Violence™Staff Development
This 10-lesson, interactive curriculum is specifically designed to complete the prevention message through the development of a positive school climate. Inspire teachers, counselors and other instructors to maximize their effectiveness in the classroom to create a whole school climate which reduces risk factors, builds protective factors and supports resiliency. The Staff Development Curriculum is bundled with Too Good for Drugs and Violence™ High School, but is also applicable in Elementary and Middle School Environments. The sessions include:

Evaluation

Each of the Too Good Programs includes an evaluation instrument for you to gauge the implementation of the Too Good Programs in your classroom.

Training

While the Too Good Programs do not require training for effective implementation, we do recommend that you receive training prior to implementing the Too Good Programs in your school or District.
